Pioneer Historical Cemetery of Ehrenberg

I have been to a few old cemeteries before - but this cemetery is a bit different from any others I have seen.

It definitely has a "Wild West" feel to it.

The graves are all covered with stones...

...and the headstones are carved out of wood...if the grave is marked at all.

It is worth the short detour off of I-10 to stop by and take a stroll into the "Wild West"

What a cool cemetery. I find cemeteries fascinating. In the Amana Colonies in Iowa the communal church buries people as they die so you can walk through and tell if there was something catastrophic that happened. Its like reading a history book. This one is like that too, llke opening up a history book.

Hey Mama!

The reason that they covered in stone was to deter animals (namely Coyotes) from digging up the graves.

Have fun!!
